Appearing effeminate (in his 1997 return as host Myers introduced his lover Helmut, played by Will Ferrell), Myers' "Dieter" costume consisted of black tights with a matching turtleneck sweater, round wire-rimmed glasses, and slicked-back hair. Myers has stated he based the character on a waiter he encountered, working at The Cameron House in Toronto, as well as German musician Klaus Nomi (after whom said monkey was named). He invariably sought to bring the discussion around to his "limited" monkey, Klaus, seated on a platform atop a miniature column. Myers played "Dieter", a bored, disaffected West German expressionist and minimalist who interviewed celebrities in whom he was demonstrably barely interested. Originally created for the Toronto company of the Second City comedy troupe, Myers later imported the character to television for the Canadian sketch comedy show It's Only Rock & Roll and the American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. “I was watching Arnold Schwarzenegger on Showtime, they were doing an interview, ‘Up close and personal,’ and were asking him about his routine of the day.” Nealon found himself intrigued by the action star’s description of his routine. “When Dana Carvey and I did our first tour in 1987 after our first year on Saturday Night Live , we were staying at some hotel in Des Moines,” Nealon recalled in 2013. It was while on the road that Hans and Franz started taking shape. The men were also close friends and embarked on a comedy tour together during the break between SNL’s 12th and 13th seasons.
